Did you ever notice that when crowds gather to watch a sun set, most people leave immediately after the sun is below the horizon? And did you ever notice that there are always a few folks with cameras lingering around a bit longer? That’s because all those amazing colors in the sky happen AFTER the sun is below the horizon. Not convinced?
I went to Lake Miramar recently to go shoot some nature just for fun. Sure, I got shots while the sun was out. The ones I got after the sunset, though, are my absolute favorite! See for yourself…
A recent visit to Laguna Beach started with grey and overcast skies, but ended with an amazing light show in the sky!
Note the progression of sunset photos… This, my friends, is why you wait until immediately AFTER the sunset for the best colors in the sky
Another day, another beautiful home I get to photograph
What stood out to me about this home was not that the architecture was lovely and the location was amazing, but that the positive vibe of the homeowners could be felt throughout. You could tell it was a happy home!
It all started with a vision… of a girl searching through tall grassy fields, or emerging from the water, in the black of night. This session had a mind of its own though.
When nature talks, you listen.
The setting sun on the landscape was begging for us to use its light. We got some night shots, too, but they don’t fully bring to life the vision in my mind. The sunset shots, though… magical.

I have this need to camp at least once a year… ideally twice or more. This year so far, I’ve gone twice. The first time I nearly lost my toes because of unexpected snowfall in parts of Joshua Tree (brrr!). The second trip was this past weekend, and it was amazing!
Point Mugu is just north of Malibu, before reaching Oxnard. Your campsite is your own private strip of beach, with the Pacific on one end and gorgeous mountains on the other. To top off a wonderful weekend, there was an amazing meteor shower on Saturday night! I saw about a dozen shooting stars, some with long bright tails… then I dozed off in a tent w/ a screen top, allowing full night sky view. Loved it!
This stretch of beach is not only great for camping weekends, but can be great for a day trip too. There’s parking along the roads for free, and you can enjoy the beaches right alongside the campers! What a great location for some family photos! Want to find out more about this postcard setting tucked into the coast? Find more info HERE!

At the risk of being one of those people that posts sunset pictures way too often, I’m sharing this with you all.
This past Friday, I had my 8-yr “California-versary”. Yep, I celebrate that. Let me explain! It was a big moment. I got a chance to house-sit a relative’s house for 3 months, so I packed up what I could of my life in two suitcases and boarded a plane. It was a new beginning, I knew nobody (except for the relatives that were MIA for 3 months), and I was nervous and excited all at the same time. I started from scratch, starting by literally opening up the yellow pages and cold-calling design firms to ask if I could drop off my resume. Eight years later, I’ve gotten a lot of work experience, a good amount of traveling, a growing circle of friends, and I’m on the verge of launching my freelance career full-time!
Anyway, to celebrate this day, I decided to visit the beach. What better way to feel like I’m truly in California, right?! Man, the sky put on one heck of a show for me that evening! I watched the ocean, sky, and setting sun for over an hour. I just watched and listened. It was amazing.
All I had on me was my phone, so here’s a shot of what I saw during my visit.
Here’s to many more happy years in this beautiful state
